This is a formal occasion.  Nice clothes are to be worn under the gown, and shoes are required; no shorts, jeans, tennis shoes or casual sandals.  This is a special occasion for the entire Senior Class — please do not call attention to yourself.  Caps and gowns are not to be decorated.  Culturally traditional adornments are acceptable when customary for the student’s family.  Floral leis are allowed; however, no money leis, candy leis, or hand-held flowers.

Expected Behavior by Students and Guests:

The Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2020 will be conducted in a dignified and formal manner.  Many people have worked hard all year to ensure the quality of the ceremony.  Students are expected to exercise good judgment in their appearance and behavior.  Inappropriate or embarrassing actions by students or their guests will be grounds for exclusion from the ceremony.  No artificial noisemakers, air horns, beach balls, bubbles, signs, banners, etc. are allowed in the audience or on the floor where the students are seated.  Commencement is a family affair.  Guests are expected to be respectful of the occasion.

Pre-Ceremony Rehearsal:

Students will be walking in and seated alphabetically, with the exception of Valedictorians who will walk in first.  Guests and visitors are not allowed in the facility during rehearsal.

Admission:

Prior to entry, Arena staff will search guests and our graduates. For guests, there will be two lines into the building, one for those without bags and one for those with bags. We strongly recommend all bags be left at home as the bag-check line can be lengthy. Balloons, backpacks, oversized bags, outside food and beverages, confetti (including silly string or similar items), bottles, cans, glass (including vases), coolers, helmets, chains, spikes, tents, laser pointers, fireworks, weapons, animals or pets (except ADA), INFLATABLES and NOISEMAKERS and AIR HORNS are not allowed in Angel Of The Winds Arena. Again, you will not be allowed to bring items, such as balloons, inside Angel Of The Winds. Please contact Angel Of The Winds Arena at 425.322.2600 if you have any questions about this policy.

Pictures:

A professional photographer (unaffiliated with Northshore School District) will take a picture of each senior as they receive their diploma cover.  Proofs will be available online and you may order copies – you are under no obligation to purchase these photos.  After the ceremony, visit their website, www.gradimages.com to view the photos.  If you wish to purchase photos, you may order from that website or by calling (800) 261-2576.  No one will be permitted on the floor during the ceremony to take pictures.

Name-Reading:

The moment when a student’s name is read is a milestone that will only happen once in a person’s lifetime – the culmination of 13 years of schooling. This moment is of significant importance to each graduate’s parents or guardians and guests. In an effort to provide a respectful moment for each of our graduates and their families, we are asking that you refrain from excessive celebrating when student names are called so everyone has the opportunity to be proud and to hear their senior’s name called. The celebration portion of the ceremony will take place following the traditional “turning of the tassel” at the completion of the formal ceremony. Then let’s cheer in unity and support of our 2020 graduates with Jaguar spirit and pride!

Post-Ceremony Re-uniting:

Once graduates have departed the arena floor, guests must exit their seats immediately and may reunite with their graduate in the View Lounge, concourses, or an outside pre-determined destination for a meet and greet. Alpha signs A-Z will be posted on the concourse walls to help graduates and families reunite. Angel Of The Winds allows a maximum of 30 minutes for post-Ceremony meet and greets.

It is easiest if you sit on the same side as your graduate:

  • Students with last names A thru K - South Side (Wall Street)
  • Students with last names L thru Z - North Side (Hewitt Avenue)
